One of the most important issues in the process of students learning is the family support, that's why I consider that is necessary to mantain good relationships with your parent and siblings. The following text talks about a little bit of it.
Family Relationships
Some folks think that the nuclear family was named after the bomb of the same name, but the reality is that the family unit forms the nucleus — the center — of most societies.
Most family groups are connected by a genetic heritage, but it takes a bit of work to create other bonds. Many families deal with sibling rivalry. Children — sharing the limited resources of the parents' attention as well as toys, friends and space — often need help sorting through all of the emotional ups and downs this can cause. Introducing step-siblings adds a whole new dimension to the emotional mix.
Adults trying to nurture an intimate relationship amid the stress of financial issues and different personality styles find peaks and valleys that often causes instability in the home. Adding children to the mix makes for a new set of constantly changing needs that have to be met. If all of that is managed well, the children grow and leave the nest... and then there is empty nest syndrome, mid-life crisis and adapting to growing older together.
As amazing as it may be, many families do get through all of this and hold on to healthy, warm relationships that are strengthened by challenges. It isn't easy, but it is possible. In the best cases, the support and caring that the family provides outweighs all of the negatives. Finding ways to help your family work through problems to reach a positive outcome is complicated. Each person brings an individual point of view to the table and blending everyone into one harmonious family is an ongoing process.
Our reflection
This article is very short but concise and We choose it because family is one of the most important factors in the process of student’s learning. When students have a good relationship with their parents it is easier to reach good results at school, since there is a commitment between all the members of the family and they support each other so the students feel more motivated to study and learn new things. This is why We thought it would be meaningul to read an article about family relationships, and also to do something to encourage students to get closer to their family. For this reason we create an activity related to this acticle after this reflection.
This text points out a lot of real and meaningful things that happen through most of the families lives of people in general. In the article, families are seeing as the basic organization of most sociecities. In other words, they are the building blocks of our society since they were the first ever kind of organizations of humand kind. When men and woman learned how to organize themselves in their daily routines and domestic duties, they were able to move forward and create impressive civilizations as Egyptians, Mayan, Greeks, Romans, etc. We can not be naive and think that these civilizations were born from one day to another, because obviously it took them some time to reach what they achieved. And we can imagine that all starts with a family, as in the bible, Adan and Eva were the first people in the earth and with them as a family starts the population growth so, if we consider those points we can certainly agreed that family are the first and basic organization of our society.
Secondly, the family is seeing as a problematic issue, that is to say that in family daily life you can find countless problems and arguements that can affect the realtionships between parents and sibling, since as human beings we are all different and unique; and this fact, sometimes can be a negative issue since can lead members of a family to have quarrels about differents opinions and ways of live and see life. Throughout the history of a family, we can witness some facts as arguements, quarrels, disagreements, financial problems, and the emerge of bad felings as envy, arrogance, resentment, etc between the family members that will lead them to be constantly in a roller coaster in terms of their relationship. We believe that no family is exempt from this kind of situations or feelings; since as human beings, we are always in conflict with ourselves because we all have interests and ideals but through life experiences, we realize that the reality differ with our ideals and we have to humour family and society in general so, all of this can cause problems with the people who surround us, specially in our home as this is the most intimate place that we have, where we act and show us the way we really are. Is in our place where we have first experienced feelings as resentment when our parents have told us off or grounded unfairly, or envy when a llitle sibling born and the attention and cares are not longer just for us. All this situations we have mentioned, attempt on the family stability and are a matter of concern between parents.
Nevertheless, as the text mentioned, when parents have worried about establishing strong relationships between the members of their family; that are based mainly in respect, tolerance, confidence and love, all the possible problems or issues that can affect them, will be overcome and seen as life experiences that would help the family growth.
Class Activity
To create this activity, We based mainly in the part of the text which says that families are exposed to a large amount of conflicts, which can lead them to distance themselves from each other. For this reason, We think that is very important to motivate and encourage students to create and to look for moments where they can share with their parents and sibling, in order to fix posible differences, get to know each other even more and get closer with the members of their family.
This activity is adressed to fifth grade students, since We consider that this is the right moment to educate children about the importance of having good family’ relationships. We think that when you do it at an early age, you have more possibilities that the concern and interest about family can last until their adulthood. Besides, I believe that children are more enthusiastic so, this activity could be very interesting and amusing for them, and they could be willing to participate and motivate their family to participate as well. What is more, this activity should be divided in two sessions; as the first one should be destined to introduce the topic: “family” and teach students vocabulary about the subject through some flashcards in order to make it more understandable and didactic. After this, the teacher should tell students to make a family tree in English using the previous vocabulary the teacher gave them. And, as a final point, of the first session, the teacher should start a kind of conversation with students and ask them the following questions:
1. Do you like to devote some time with your family?
2. What things do you do with your family?
3. What things would you like to do with your family?
4. Which members of your family would you like to devote more time with?
The teacher should give the opportunity to all students to answer, no matter if they do it in Spanish because the purpose of these questions is just to engage students in conversation, and to prepare the second part of the activity. Once students have answered the questions, the teacher should ask them to write down it in their notebooks.
Finally, the teacher should ask them to bring some materials, as 3 different colours of cards, papier mache, glue, scissors and a black or blue marker for next session.
In the second session, the teacher should start by explainig to the students that they are going to create a Bingo, in order to play with their family so, they should make as much cards as the number of their family members and that the prizes of this game will be coupons that should say for instace “you win one free movie with mom” or “you win an indoor picnic with the whole family” or whatever they want to do with them (for this part the activity they can use the answers of the questions of the previous sessions). The idea is that everybody who plays the game win a prize, because it will be useful to them to get closer to one another.
After the teacher explain the activity and it purpose, he/she should tell students how to do it. But the most important is that every single student make a different game, with different colours and prizes according to their family.
When students finish doing the bingo, the teacher should tell them that they should choose a specific time or day to play the game because this way it will become in a family tradition. For instance they could play the game every last Friday of each month or for Christmas, mother’s day, or in a day which is special for all members of the family.
The ideal would be that the family play the game in English, that is to say that the numbers should be told in English and Spanish at the same time if the rest of the family apart from the student don’t know it.
The main aim of this activity, is that student can take the initiative and ask their parents and sibling to gather once in a while, in order to share some time and have a nice and pleasant moment, since this would help to the family closeness and even so, parents as well as sibling may be very busy, I’m sure that no one will refuse to devote some time with their family in the presence of such tender invitation.
